I’ve been in business for more than forty years. There’s been a lot of fun and a lot of learning. I can’t claim any special expertise, but I’ve learned some things from my experience. Here are a few of them. It’s your brain, use it wisely You’re most likely to do great work when your brain is fresh. As you go through the day, your ability to make good decisions and do good work erodes. So don’t waste your precious brain and willpower on trivial things. Make routine things routine with checklist.  show all text

The time you enjoy wasting  is not wasted time. — Bertrand Russell A friend of mine, Russell, was looking for a new job a few years ago. When I asked him how he felt about it, he replied, “It’s different now that I have kids. I just enjoy spending time with them. No matter what happens in my job search, it makes everything OK.” Russell’s attitudeis much different than many of the executives I coach, such as George, who feels uncomfortable coming home and spending time with his kids. “…

In 2014 I wrote about the Kroll and Compliance Week 2014 Anti-Bribery and Corruption Benchmarking Report, subtitled Untangling the Web of Risk and Compliance. I found the 2014 Report to be extremely relevant and engaging, focusing, among the conclusions, upon the peril of “vetting and forgetting,” link here. Accordingly, when the 2015 Report was recently released, subtitled How to Companies Navigate Bribery and Corruption (link here to Kroll for the entire Report), I was anxious to see what, if.  show all text

By  Richard Bistrong These days, most sophisticated multinational firms, at least those that might be subject to liability under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act or similar laws, have official anti-bribery compliance programs. But as many observers have rightly noted, while formal control systems are important, they have their limits: the formal rules in place, or what top-level management asserts when setting the “tone from the top,” may often differ from what actually happens on the ground. .  show all text

SheSpeaks.com surveyed 1,885 of its members on the U.S. Department of Treasury’s announcement that a woman will be added to the $10 See also: 10 kickass women who deserve a place on the new $10 bill 67% of the respondents said that a woman shouldn’t have to share the real estate with the founding father. We sat around a plain round table in a non-descript room marked N215 in the Las Vegas Convention Center during the second day of the SHRM 2015 Annual Conference & Exposition. We sat next to each other while three other team members listened in and caught up on work. About 20 minutes in, he used the word “doolally.” “No one goes, ‘Oh that’s a crazy piece of HR doolally.’ Everyone goes, ‘Yeah, that.’ That’s real world.” “What’s a doolally?” I asked. “I have no idea,” he said. Most companies ignore organizational culture. It’s not important to them. Business leaders have been conditioned to focus exclusively on strategy and operations, all the while hoping that a strong culture will eventually be developed once they attain success. This mindset it totally understandable… and completely wrong! Focusing exclusively on tactical nuts and bolts will keep the company from ever achieving cultural nirvana – and companies that succumb to this small-time thinking will continue.  show all text

Since the law countenances honcho salary upto 5 percent of profits, everyone assumes that even when the median salary and the honcho salary differ by a country mile, it is kosher.

Mid-Year Look at Corporate Compliance in 2015 | Compliance Week

If you’ve been reading anything I’ve written over the past few years, you know what a big fan I am of routines. I’m especially fond of the routines – physical, mental, relational and spiritual – that help you show up at your best. Mindful routines help us groove the behaviors that lead to incremental improvement. Incremental improvement consistently achieved leads to big results. So, yay for routines! That said, every so often it’s important to change it up.
